Since its founding in 1991 with the development of a seven-lot residential subdivision in an upscale Twin Cities neighborhood, Exeter has been driven to create quality projects in urban settings. Now, over thirty years later, the company is focused on developing best-in-class multifamily communities in the Twin Cities and Phoenix markets
While our focus today is on ground-up multifamily projects, Exeter has years of experience with renovating and re-positioning existing buildings into new multifamily, retail, and office uses. Many of these projects incorporated complex and multi-tiered financial sources, each with its own unique characteristics, challenges, and solutions.
Exeter takes pride in cultivating relationships with development partners including architects, general contractors, and property management/leasing firms. Exeter has benefited greatly from longstanding capital partners as well – both individual and institutional.
LEADERSHIP
Rob joined Exeter in 1993 and has experience in all aspects of the commercial real estate business, including acquisitions, entitlements, finance, development, leasing, and sales. Rob is primarily focused on capitalizing current and future projects. He has an MBA in Finance from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and a BA degree in History from Northwestern University.
Herb joined Exeter in 2003 and has extensive experience in all aspects of real estate development. Herb’s focus for new developments includes site selection, entitlements, project design, and construction oversight. He has an MBA degree in Finance from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and a BA degree in Finance from the University of St. Thomas. Herb is a member of ULI, Lambda Alpha International, and the Twin Cities Housing Alliance.
Tom joined Exeter in 2009 and has extensive experience in project finance and management. Tom currently focuses on investor and governmental relations, strategic planning, and the overall development process. Tom began his career over 30 years ago with the Eberhardt Company in Minneapolis and continues to manage family multifamily properties. Tom has a BA degree in English Literature from the University of Vermont and is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the Twin Cities Housing Alliance.
Cheryl joined Exeter in 2013 following 20 years of real estate accounting experience with other real estate firms in the Twin Cities. She oversees the accounting operations for the company and its affiliates and works with the company’s outside auditors and tax preparers. Cheryl has an MBA degree in Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas and a BA degree in Accountancy from the University of Minnesota.
James A. Stolpestad

Jim started the Exeter business in 1991 following 20 years as a lawyer in government and private practice. While he is retired from active Exeter property management, he retains interests in legacy projects and is general counsel of Exeter Asset Services LLC that helps owners, lenders, and other parties with distressed assets.
